Review: A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I finally finished reading this book, I've slacking in my reading lately, and it felt like I started this book ages ago(probably did), but I really enjoyed this book, despite is length.
This book is very well written, the story is quite good, and the development of characters is so awesome (despite the huge quantity of the characters) :D seriously sometimes I couldn't keep with all the names.

I hope I can read faster the next book on this series because, WINTER IS COMING!

I am not reading this edition, I have the Kindle bundle edition, but this way it counts to my 2011 Reading challenge as one book not as 1/4th of a book :D

Review: Verde

Verde by Ted Dekker

Con este libro terminé la serie del Círculo, esta serie me agradó mucho pero este libro en particular no tanto.

Hubiera deseado no haber leido el prologo donde explican que la serie era en realidad un círculo y como tal no podía tener principio ni fín, esto inevitablemente arruina cierta parte del final del libro, ya que se intuye que tiene que terminar de la misma manera que Negro empieza.

Verde retoma la historia 10 años despues de donde Blanco termina, en donde las circunstancias de los "albinos" comandados por Thomas Hunter son muy adversas.

A diferencia de los otros 3 libros, Verde se centra en el mundo de Elyon y deja muy de lado la realidad de 2000 años antes que es más parecida a nuestra realidad. Siento que en cuanto el manejo de los 2 mundos este libro queda un poco a deber, ya que lo poco que pasa en el otro mundo es hasta cierto punto irrelevante.

Se introducen 2 nuevos personajes importantes Billy y Janae, esta ultima es la hija de Monique cuyo padre no es revelado en ninguna parte del libro pero que probablemente tenía algo de vampiro o shataiki. Esto es probablemente lo más raro del libro, el que el autor tratar de explicar el origen de la raza de vampiros que al final no tiene ningún impacto en el transcurso de la historia.

El final es inesperado y me dejó con sentimientos encontrados, por lo cual aún no me decido sí me gustó o no.

Creo que este es el peor de los libros de la serie, pero no tan malo como para recomendar no leerlo si ya leiste los otros 3 libros.

Review: House

House by Frank E. Peretti

This is probably the darkest book of Dekker, this I think is because of his co-author Frank Peretti (I can't really tell because I have not read any book from Peretti).

Jack and Stephanie are a couple that may very well be already divorced, since they can´t stand each other and are in constant fight. They are on their way to meet a marriage counselor but get lost, a suspicious cop advices them to take a little road that finally took them to the House.

Inside the apparently deserted house there is another couple, Leslie and Randy, they seem not to have troubles like Jack and Stephanie, and the 4 of them are soon meet the 3 weird hosts of the house(Stewart, Betty and their son Pete).

They are about to have dinner when all that seemed weird and unpleasant becomes even weirder and dangerous just at the moment a can with 3 House rules appears.

The rules where made by a misterious guy named White who wears a tinmask. The 3 rules could be very well summarized in one rule "give me a dead body by dawn and I may let you live"

Up to this point I thought the book was amazing, I would ask a little more character development of the two couples, but otherwise it was a really nice beginning.


What I didn't like

- I know it was suposed to be confusing all the rooms in the basement, 

but I thought there would be somekind of reason to all that, take 

the mirrors for example, in the end they were irrelevant.

- The ending seemed a little weak, Susan being an angel was not really

 a surprise, and it should have not been for white (he himself being a demon),

 so why did he killed her?, I would let that pass and called it a nice ending 

if it wasn't for the ridicolous way Stephanie shooed the "deamons" away.

I think that after all that dark beginning of the book I was a little bit dissapointed by the "good always beats the evil" kind of ending.

Review: Duma Key

Duma Key by Stephen King

Una cosa curiosa del libro es que en la cubierta trasera no tiene ningún texto, normalmente en esta parte ponen un resumen o premisa de la historia que nos debería insitar a comprar el libro, sin embargo no hay tal. Parece un poco arrogante por parte de los editores suponer que solo por decir "Stephen King" en la cubierta se venderá el libro, aunque tengo que admitir que conmigo les funcionó.

Duma Key es un pueblito en la costa de Florida a donde el personaje principal Edgar Freemantle se retira a descansar y recuperarse tanto fisica como emocionalmente, despues de sufrir un accidente que casí le cuesta la vida y cuyas secuelas principales fuerón la perdida de su brazo derecho y de su matrimonio.

Renta una casa rosa a la orilla de la playa. Como recomendación medica y terapeutica empieza a pintar con el brazo que le queda. Pronto se da cuenta que las pinturas que hace son más que simples representaciones del paisaje de Duma.


En mi opinion las primeras tres cuartas partes del libro son muy buenas, me agradó mucho la forma en la que mezcla lo sobrenatural con los sintomas comunes que tienen las personas que han perdido una extremidad (miembro fantasma, en el cual las personas sienten dolor en el miembro ausente), tambien como va ingresando la historia de Libbit (La niña que en los años 20's tiene el dón de la pintura al igual que Edgar). Pero creo que el final pudo haber sido mejor.

Buen libro a final de cuentas, pero un final un poco descepcionante.



Lo que no me gustó del final es que resulta poco creible el poder, la astucia y los objetivos de Perse.

- Nunca se explica qué es lo que quería Perse de Edgar y de Libbit. (sí ya se que los usaba como medios para causar daño, pero tendría que tener un objetivo, ¿no?)

- Tampoco queda claro porque no simplemente mataba a Libbit o a Edgar una vez despierta (en vez de mandar a Mary contra su hija mandarla contra el mismo Edgar), se podría argumentar que los necesitaba para mantenerse despierta, pero si este era el caso entonces ¿para qué los ponía en su contra matando a sus hermanas e hija?

- Tal vez no sea importante, pero hubieron algunas cosas que siento que estuvieron de más y que esperaba que tuvieran alguna reelevancia al final, como el hecho de que Wireman hubiera tenido poderes telequineticos y los hubiera perdido o saber quien había convencido a Pam de hacerse el tatuaje, etc.

Review: The Call of Cthulhu

I was expecting something more exciting, maybe thats why I din't really loved this book.
It is well written and the description of the Cthulhu cult and Cthulhu itself is very good, but I was hoping more action and there simply wasn't any. Almost all the book is about dreams, antique sculptures and anecdotes, but not so much about Chtulhu itself.

I don't know maybe I was expecting too much.

Este libro lo compre por 15 pesos en el 5to remate de libros del Auditorio y por ese precio no me esperaba una obra maestra, de hecho lo compré por el tema de informática más que nada.



Al principio la novela no me llamó tanto la atención, y en ciertos puntos se me hizó poco creible, sobre todo en cuestiones técnicas de informatica y hacking que dudo que existan en la vida real.



La historia en general tiene un buen ritmo y se pone mejor conforme avanza el libro, pero desgraciadamente el climax se me hizó soso y falto de creatividad.

Review: The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Ok so It took me more time to read again than I thought, but it was worth it.
There are simply great jokes and plots that one just can't get tired of.

I know that this review can't be really objective, since I declare myself a fanboy of this book, but I will do my best.

The first 3 books are incredible!! ok... so much for objectivity.

The first book "The Hitchhicker's Guide To The Galaxy" is a very nice introduction to the galaxy as Douglas Adams imagines it, the human kind being so amazingly primitive that we still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea (by the way I believe almost no one thinks that nowadays, and every time a see a person with a wristwatch I think "WHY?!"), for that reason it universally speaking it doesn't really matter that Vogons (hedious) want to demolish the planet to create a bypass, it matters even less if the bypass is built or not.

"The Restaurant at the end of the universe" is brilliant, and as earth no longer exists this book is a lot more alien centered. Adams also begins to use phantoms, tele-transportation and time traveling but I think it manages well and its justified most of the times.

"Life the universe and everything" is still great but not as great as the first two, the reason for this in my opinion is that Adams had created a certain synergy in the little group of charachters (Arthur, Ford, Trillian, Zaphod, and Marvin) and in the plot of this book these charachters are all separated from each other until the final chapters. Anyway the ending is superb, probably the best of all the books.

"So long and thanks for all the fish" has funny jokes and plots as all the other books but not my favorite.
It is very entertaining to read the romantic relationship between Arthur Dent and Fenny, BUT I think it was too complicated (introducing the thing about parallel universes and she knowing how to make all human problems go away and forgetting afterwards) and Adams took the easy way out making her disappear in his next book along with earth (at least the earth as Arthur knows it).
Also the saddest thing of this book Marvin "dies". :(

"Mostly Harmless" still nice to read but I did miss Marvin and Zaphod and a little bit Fenny who by this time I was starting to get in love with through Arthur and really felt sad for him when she vanished out of the blue.
Apart from that I didn't like the way Trillian behaves in this book, she was so intelligent, caring and sensitive in "Life the universe and everything" and now she just gets her artificially inseminated daughter named Random, abandoned continuously in order to do her job, that's just mean.
I think the best part of this book is when Arthur finally succeeded and was worshiped on his new career as a sandwich maker. The ending of the story is good but not great.

tenis de mesa... deporte para todas las edades

Viendo un poco sobre la historia del tenis de mesa me encontré muchos vídeos de tenis de mesa cuando aún se jugaba con paletas "duras" es decir paletas únicamente de madera, sin gomas o plásticos.

En el vídeo que les pongo más abajo se pueden ver varios puntos de la final del abierto inglés de 1949 entre el inglés Victor Barna y el estadounidense Marty Reisman.



Marty Reisman en el video anterior solo tenía 19 años y ya era uno de los mejores del mundo, si eso no les parece sorprendente, tal vez el siguiente vídeo lo hará: Marty Reisman con más de 80 años de edad sigue jugando tenis de mesa, y seguramente lo hace mejor que yo.

Cine gratis en cinemark

Para los que no se han enterado desde el 11 de abril hasta el domingo 17 de abril , podrán entrar gratis a cualquier Cinemark de México si imprimen la imagen que les pongo al lado.
La verdad no lo he ocupado, y con las películas que tienen actualmente en la cartelera ni se me antoja, pero gratis hasta las patadas, ¿no?

Judit Polgar en el campeonato europeo

El mes pasado se celebró en Francia el campeonato europeo de ajedrez en el cual participaron 393 de los mejores jugadores europeos.


Los 4 ganadores fueron Vladimir Potkin (Rusia), Radoslaw Wojtaszek (Polonia), Judit Polgar (Hungría) y Alexandr Moiseenko (Ucrania) 

La partida que se muestra a continuación deja en claro que Judit Polgar sigue siendo la mejor ajedrecista del mundo y que la barrera del genero dentro del mundo ajedrez no es más que una ficción.

Aardvark y el viernes güarro internacional

Hace ya tiempo que vengo usando una aplicación llamada aardvark, de hecho la vengo usando desde que google compró a la empresa
La aplicación es bastante interesante, consiste en que cada usuario registrado le dice a aardvark los temas de los cuales es experto o conoce, y en el momento en el que detecta que alguien le hace una pregunta de ese tema se la pasa a la persona correcta, ya sea por chat o por correo.
Uno de los temas que le puse a aardvark del cual conozco es sobre "web sites" y hoy en la mañana me llegó una pregunta que al parecer estaba relacionada con esto, la pregunta fue:

Review: Collins Classics Through the Looking Glass

Collins Classics Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll

I enjoyed like a child this book, it was so fun to read that I wish it was longer.
The book is so well prepared, beginning with the chess position that leads the plot of the whole book, all the poems, songs and riddles, ending with the final acrostic with the name of the real Alice, everything is very well worked out to create simply one of the best books I've ever read.
So much has been said about Lewis Carol, about his probable use of drugs when writing and his untypical affection with Alice, all I know is that this guy had a great imagination and a superb writing style, I hope to read another book written by him soon.

Review: La llave de plata y otros cuentos/ The Golden Key and other stories

La llave de plata y otros cuentos/ The Golden Key and other stories by H.P. Lovecraft

Empiezo a pensar que hice mal al comprar tantos libros de Lovecraft seguidos. La mayoría de los libros que compré contienen muy buenos cuentos, pero el estilo, trama y prosa de todos es en extremo similar, lo que hace que uno se aburra o hasta harte de ellos.

El cuento principal "La llave de plata" junto con su continuación "A través de las puertas de la llave de plata" exploran en relativamente pocas páginas muchos eventos fantásticos como el viaje en el tiempo, mundos paralelos, seres antiguos y dioses inconcebibles, lo cual crea un ambiente con muchas posibilidades, desgraciadamente esta historia tiene un final muy simple y predecible.



Los demás cuentos: "Nyarlathotep: El caos reptante", "El extraño" y "El árbol en la colina" son entretenidos pero no lo suficiente como para hacer más extensa esta reseña.
